What personal information do we process? When you visit, use, or navigate our Services, we may process personal information depending on how you interact with us and the Services, the choices you make, and the products and features you use. Learn more about personal information you disclose to us.
Do we process any sensitive personal information? Some of the information may be considered "special" or "sensitive" in certain jurisdictions, for example your racial or ethnic origins, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs. We do not process sensitive personal information.
Do we collect any information from third parties? Only from Google, and only if you connect your Google account. If you sign in with Google, Google gives us your name, email address, and profile picture. If you choose to import your YouTube subscriptions, Google also gives us the list of YouTube channels you subscribe to. Learn more about how we handle sign-in with Google.
What do our Anki add-on and browser extension collect? The Anki add-on and Anki uploads send us the text, scheduling, and review history of your cards, never media or your AnkiWeb login. The browser extension reads pages on your device and sends us words in the languages you are learning and how you read them, never the address or text of a page unless you choose to save it. Learn more about Anki and the browser extension.
How do we process your information? We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. We may also process your information for other purposes with your consent. We process your information only when we have a valid legal reason to do so. TABLE OF CONTENTS
1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
Personal information you disclose to us
In Short: We collect personal information that you provide to us.
We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products and Services, when you participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise when you contact us.
Personal Information Provided by You. The personal information that we collect depends on the context of your interactions with us and the Services, the choices you make, and the products and features you use. The personal information we collect may include the following:
Sensitive Information. We do not process sensitive information. Voice recordings are personal information and are described in "WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR VOICE RECORDINGS?"; we do not use them to identify you.
Google Sign-In Data. You can register with us using your Google account instead of an email address and password. If you do, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google, as described in the section called "HOW DO WE HANDLE YOUR SOCIAL LOGINS?" below.
All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.
Information automatically collected
In Short: Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Services.
We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, information about how and when you use our Services, and other technical information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes.
Like many businesses, we also collect information through cookies and similar technologies.
The information we collect includes:
- Log and Usage Data. Log and usage data is service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect when you access or use our Services and which we record in log files. Depending on how you interact with us, this log data may include your IP address, device information, browser type, and settings and information about your activity in the Services (such as the date/time stamps associated with your usage, pages and files viewed, searches, and other actions you take such as which features you use), device event information (such as system activity, error reports (sometimes called "crash dumps"), and hardware settings).
2. HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. We may also process your information for other purposes with your consent.
We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:
- To facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts. We may process your information so you can create and log in to your account, as well as keep your account in working order.
- To recommend things to read and watch. We use what you open in Palimpsest, what you mark "Not for me," what you open from our emails, and how well you know the words in each article or video to order the Recommended lists and choose the picks in our emails.
- To send the emails you ask for. We email you only if you say yes to that email, and each is asked for separately. The picks email has a few things to read or watch, chosen for your level, weekly or daily at the hour you choose. The cards email comes on days you have flashcards due and haven't reviewed yet. The morning report, the morning after a day you use Palimpsest, shows which of your word scores changed. We keep when you said yes and the wording you agreed to. Every email has a link to stop it, and so does Settings.
3. WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?
In Short: We may share information in specific situations described in this section and/or with the following third parties.
We may need to share your personal information in the following situations:
- Service Providers. We use the following companies to run the Services. Each one receives only the information it needs for the job listed, and we do not permit any of them to use it for their own purposes:
- Supabase (database and account sign-in): everything stored in your account.
- Render (application hosting): your requests to our servers, including your IP address.
- Cloudflare (security and delivery for our website, and forwarding the email you send to help@palimpsest.tech): your requests to our servers, including your IP address, and the emails you send us.
- Anthropic (AI features): the text you read, write, or ask about when you use an AI feature, and words from your vocabulary list when a feature uses them to tailor its answer to you.
- PostHog (product analytics): your account ID and email address, and which pages and features you use.
- Sentry (error monitoring): technical details when something goes wrong, which can include your IP address and account ID.
- Resend (email delivery, only for the emails you say yes to): your email address and the emails we send you.
- TermsFeed (the cookie-consent banner on our home page): your browser loads the banner from their servers, so they receive your IP address.
- Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.
- Other Users. When you share personal information (for example, by posting comments, contributions, or other content to the Services) or otherwise interact with public areas of the Services, such personal information may be viewed by all users and may be publicly made available outside the Services in perpetuity. Other users will be able to view descriptions of your activity, communicate with you within our Services, and view your profile.
4. DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?
In Short: We may use cookies and other tracking technologies to collect and store your information.
We may use cookies and similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and pixels) to gather information when you interact with our Services. Some online tracking technologies help us maintain the security of our Services and your account, prevent crashes, fix bugs, save your preferences, and assist with basic site functions.
We also use two service providers that collect usage information on our Services: PostHog, for product analytics (which pages and features you use, linked to your account ID and email address once you are signed in), and Sentry, for error monitoring (technical details when something goes wrong). If you decline in the cookie banner on our home page, PostHog stops recording your activity. We do not use cookies or tracking technologies for advertising, and we do not permit any third party to use them on our Services for advertising.
Our public cognates page keeps a random identifier in your browser's local storage once you send a report or a suggestion from it. It identifies that browser, not you; it is sent to us only together with your own reports; and it exists so that, if you later create an account from the same browser, those reports can be attached to your account and you can be told what became of them. Clearing your browser's site data removes it.
Because we do not use these technologies for targeted advertising and do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are defined under US state privacy laws, they involve no "sale" or "sharing" for you to opt out of. You can still decline analytics cookies with the "Cookie Preferences" link at the bottom of our home page, and exercise your other rights as described in the section "DO UNITED STATES RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?"
You can review or change your cookie choices at any time with the "Cookie Preferences" link at the bottom of our home page.
5. DO WE OFFER ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-BASED PRODUCTS?
In Short: We offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies.
As part of our Services, we offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies (collectively, "AI Products"). These tools are designed to enhance your experience and provide you with innovative solutions. The terms in this Privacy Notice govern your use of the AI Products within our Services.
Use of AI Technologies
We provide the AI Products through one third-party service provider, Anthropic (the "AI Service Provider"). As outlined in this Privacy Notice, your input, output, and personal information will be shared with and processed by the AI Service Provider to enable your use of our AI Products for purposes outlined in "WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?" You must not use the AI Products in any way that violates the terms or policies of the AI Service Provider.
Our AI Products
Our AI Products are designed for the following functions:
- AI translation
- Natural language processing
- AI insights
- Text analysis
How We Process Your Data Using AI
All personal information processed using our AI Products is handled in line with our Privacy Notice and our agreement with third parties. This ensures high security and safeguards your personal information throughout the process, giving you peace of mind about your data's safety.
6. HOW DO WE HANDLE YOUR SOCIAL LOGINS?
In Short: If you choose to register or log in to our Services using a social media account, we may have access to certain information about you.
You can register and log in with your Google account. When you do, Google gives us your name, email address, and profile picture. We do not receive your Google password or your contacts. On our YouTube page you can also choose "Import Subscriptions", which asks Google for read-only access to your YouTube account. We use that access only to read the list of channels you subscribe to, so that we can follow them for you, and we store the access token Google issues so that the list can be refreshed. You can remove that access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Our use of YouTube data is also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
We will use the information we receive only for the purposes that are described in this Privacy Notice or that are otherwise made clear to you on the relevant Services. Please note that we do not control, and are not responsible for, other uses of your personal information by your third-party social media provider. We recommend that you review their privacy notice to understand how they collect, use, and share your personal information, and how you can set your privacy preferences on their sites and apps.
7. WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR ANKI DECKS AND FLASHCARD DATA?
In Short: If you upload Anki decks or use our Anki add-on, we keep the text and review history of the decks you link, never your media or your AnkiWeb login. You can stop it and remove the data at any time.
What we receive. You can bring flashcards from Anki into Palimpsest in two ways: by uploading an Anki package (.apkg or .colpkg) on our website, or with our Anki add-on. Either way, we receive the text of your cards (every field of each note), their tags, your deck and note-type names, each card's scheduling state, and your Anki review history. For each review, that history records when it happened, which answer button you pressed, the resulting intervals, and how long you took to answer. We do not read or store images, audio, or other media, and we do not keep the uploaded file itself.
What we keep. For decks you link to Palimpsest, we keep each card's front and back text, tags, deck and note-type names, scheduling state, and review history. For decks you do not link, we keep only the deck's name, card counts, detected language, and Anki deck settings.
The Anki add-on. The add-on does nothing until you paste in a token that you create on your Palimpsest flashcards page. After that, it uploads your Anki collection to us (all of it, or only the decks that changed) automatically after Anki syncs and when you open your Anki profile, at most every 12 hours by default. It also uploads when you ask for a sync from the add-on or from our website, and when you change its settings. While Anki is open, it checks in with us every few minutes, so we can see when you last had Anki open. The add-on never asks for, stores, or uses your AnkiWeb username or password, and it never connects to AnkiWeb. Revoking the token on your flashcards page stops the add-on from sending or receiving anything. Data it has already uploaded stays until you remove it as described below.
What we write into Anki. The add-on changes your Anki collection in only two ways. First, it adds decks you choose to send from Palimpsest, as new cards with no scheduling. Second, if you turn on review write-back (off by default), it records the reviews you do in Palimpsest in Anki with the same answer button. That reschedules those cards in Anki and adds to your Anki review history. A separate setting, also off by default, does the same for your Smart Practice answers.
How we use it. We use your flashcard data to estimate how well you remember each word, to show which words you confuse with each other, and to build Smart Practice exercises. Reviews you do inside Palimpsest can update your Palimpsest word scores; reviews you do in Anki currently do not. When you flag a word for a future deck, or miss a word in a quiz, we save the word and the title of the reading, video, or song it came from as a suggestion for a future deck. We do not send your Anki data to our AI Service Provider.
How long we keep it. We keep a linked deck's cards and review history until you unlink the deck or your account is deleted. Unlinking a deck deletes its cards, their review history, and the memory estimates they produced. We keep the deck's name, counts, and settings so that you can link it again. Each time you sync, we remove copies of Anki reviews older than 180 days from your activity history.
Shared decks. If you publish a deck, its cards, title, and description, the name of the Anki deck it came from, and your display name or username become visible. You choose whether they are visible to everyone, including people who are not signed in, or to your friends only. Unless you untick the option, we also post the deck's title and card count to your feed. Other users can report a published deck; after three reports, it is hidden. You can delete a deck you published at any time, but copies that other users have already imported or downloaded stay with them.
8. HOW DOES OUR BROWSER EXTENSION WORK?
In Short: Our browser extension reads pages on your own device. It sends us words of the languages you are learning and how you read them, never the address or text of a page unless you choose to save that page.
What stays on your device. On each page, the extension checks in your browser whether the page is in one of the languages on your account. If it is not, the extension stops there and nothing about the page is sent or kept. On a page in one of your languages, it finds the dictionary form of each word on your device: for Russian with a dictionary built into the extension, for your other languages with a word list ("pack") it downloads from your account. It notes, in your browser, how long each word was on your screen while you were active, how often it came into view, and how fast you were reading. It keeps a list of the pages in your languages you visited recently (site name and word counts only), your word scores, the word packs, and your settings on your device.
What it sends us. Words the built-in Russian dictionary does not know (about one or two in a hundred), and words of your other languages that their pack does not know, are sent on their own, shuffled, mixed across pages and without your account token, so that we can find their dictionary forms; the Russian ones we do not keep, the others we keep only until our nightly job has added their dictionary forms to the pack. Once you connect your account, the extension also sends: words it needs scores for; the words you click, look up, rate, flag or correct (for a correction, the word as written and the dictionary form you chose), the words you highlight and add to your flashcards, and your flashcard answers; and, unless you turn it off, the dictionary forms of words you read or heard (in YouTube captions) without looking them up, each with how often it appeared, the day, and a short summary of how it was read (time on screen, how often it came into view, reading pace, and whether it was near a word you looked up). These reading records are sent in batches mixed across pages and never include the page, its address or the time of day. When you look up a word, the word (not the page) is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to write its definition. As with any web request, our servers also see your IP address (see "Log and Usage Data" above).
Saving a page. Only if you press "Save to Palimpsest", the extension sends that one page's address, title and text, or for a YouTube video its video id, title, channel and captions, and we save it to your library.
How we use it. We use it to estimate which words you know, so that your vocabulary scores, flashcards and recommendations reflect your reading outside Palimpsest. The extension contains no analytics or advertising code. We do not sell this information or use it for advertising.
Your choices. "Pause" in the extension's menu stops everything. You can stop the extension counting your reading, while keeping colours and lookups, in Palimpsest Settings. Disconnecting revokes the extension's token and deletes what it downloaded; removing the extension deletes everything it stored on your device.
8a. WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR VOICE RECORDINGS?
In Short: When you speak into the microphone, the recording is sent to a speech-to-text provider to turn it into text or to score your reading, then discarded. We keep a recording only if you turn that on in Settings, only for use inside Palimpsest, and you can delete every one of them at any time.
When we hear you. Two features use the microphone, and both ask your browser for permission first: speaking practice (a spoken conversation with the tutor) and read aloud (you read a passage from the reader, or an excerpt in a quiz, and each word is marked clear, unsure or missed). Nothing is recorded until you start a recording, and you can stop or cancel it at any time.
Where the recording goes. The recording is sent to our speech-to-text provider to produce the text of what you said, together with the language you are learning; it is not sent with your name or email address. The provider processes it on our behalf and does not use it for its own purposes. If our server has no speech-to-text provider configured for your language, your browser's own speech recognition is used instead, which may send the audio to your browser's maker under its privacy terms, and only the resulting text reaches us.
What we keep. From a spoken turn we keep the text, as we would a typed one. From a read-aloud recording we keep, per word, whether it came out clearly, as part of the record of your vocabulary knowledge that the rest of Palimpsest already uses. The recording itself is discarded after scoring, unless you have turned on "Keep my read-aloud recordings" in Settings. If you have, the recording and the timing of each word in it are stored in private storage that only your account can reach, so that future features can play your own voice back to you, for example a word you said clearly next to one you missed. Kept recordings are used solely inside Palimpsest: they are never sold, shared, used to train models, used to identify you, or passed to anyone other than the storage provider that holds them.
Your choices. Keeping recordings is off by default and is a separate switch in Settings. "Delete my recordings" there removes every kept recording at once, and recordings older than 90 days are deleted automatically. Deleting your account deletes them too. Declining the microphone permission leaves every other part of Palimpsest working as before.
9. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.
We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements). No purpose in this notice will require us keeping your personal information for longer than the period of time in which users have an account with us.
Voice recordings you have chosen to keep (see "WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR VOICE RECORDINGS?") are deleted after 90 days, or sooner when you delete them in Settings; a recording you have not chosen to keep is discarded as soon as it has been scored.
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.
10. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.
We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
11. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent's use of the Services. If we learn that personal information from users less than 18 years of age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at help@palimpsest.tech.
12. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS?
In Short: You may review, change, or terminate your account at any time, depending on your country, province, or state of residence.
Withdrawing your consent: If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?" below.
However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.
Account Information
If you would at any time like to review or change the information in your account or terminate your account, you can:
- Contact us using the contact information provided.
Upon your request to terminate your account, we will deactivate or delete your account and information from our active databases. However, we may retain some information in our files to prevent fraud, troubleshoot problems, assist with any investigations, enforce our legal terms and/or comply with applicable legal requirements.
Cookies and similar technologies: Most Web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, this could affect certain features or services of our Services.
If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at help@palimpsest.tech.
13. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.
California law requires us to let you know how we respond to web browser DNT signals. Because there currently is not an industry or legal standard for recognizing or honoring DNT signals, we do not respond to them at this time.
14. DO UNITED STATES RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?
In Short: If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you and how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law. More information is provided below.
